Winning Layouts

Little Red Birds Don't Worry, from Lindsay's PaintMeAPicture etsy shop.
We have a winner for theLostEarring's blog giveaway -- a $15 Gift Certificate to bibbysrocket --- and it's Lindsay of PaintMeAPicture on etsy. Lindsay makes personalized paintings and decor for children and nurseries -- her designs are whimsical, with a knockout sense of color and composition. Honestly, I can see these paintings working well in many spaces, the rest of the home, in a cozy shop, many a space can benefit from these enlivening pictorial notes.

Again, thanks so much to all who entered at Kelly's blogspot blog, thelostearring, and to Kelly for hosting this fun giveaway party!

Now, follow me to another blog feature from etsy seller JewelsOfSaraswati's blog! And you'll love her shop -- semi-precious jewelry that combines earthy and sparkling stones in many shapes and sizes to inventive effect.

Let's hear it for these Truly Inspiring Etsians!

Shop Certificate Giveaway

***********Hello!***********
**Check out theLostEarring's lovely blog for a $15 gift certificate giveaway
to BibbysRocket on etsy!***
ENDS DEC. 21st!

Kelly, of theLostEarring, is a wonderful writer, photographer, and designer (I love the design of her well-written and engaging blog, and her eye for photography), who also makes jewelry. My favorite in her shop at the moment are these customize-able pet pendants, which, if you look at the listing, are made with inventive use of materials, and sterling silver.

The Seventies Prairie Dress, Calicos, Florals, Bohos

If you are anything like me, you might snoop around etsy a little more often than often; it wouldn't be a stretch to say I'm snooping almost all the time, and you may be snooping around less than that and yet enough to be proud of!
And sometimes something really neat catches my eye, like this colorful, slightly altered 70s paririe dress from tulip's shop, in an eye-catching, bright mix of yellows, reds, and greens. It's very Fleetwood Mac-meets-Laura Ingalls Wilder's Little House, a little of the sexy wanderlust of both worlds, European and American, innocence and maturity.
In my own closet, I have a couple of such vintage prairie skirts, and one handmade long coverall-sack type dress (no photos, sorry!), that is so unassuming, I feel it conveys honesty! Is it possible for a garment to do that? And in my shop, there is the most modern and innocent all-white eyelet and ticking Gunne-Sax-type seventies dress that one could ever hope to happily wear without dusting the ground. (free shipping in December ;)

Clothing to Make You Happy

Sometimes when things are looking bleak (whether they are in reality or whether it's just your point of view that needs 'adjustin'), clothing can make you happy. Yes, folks, they're material possessions, but they're also forms of expression!

Vintage Black Friday Event

Here's my first official vintage Black Friday post -- there's nothing that can turn a wardrobe around like a simple statement in black.

On Blogging and Being Blogged On

Longevity in a blog is not so common -- it takes perseverance, an ongoing internet connection, and the will to share on a regular basis despite those ups and downs we all experience. http://gardenantqs.blogspot.com/ has been blogging since October 2006 and for this we congratulate her!

Our gratitude to being featured in GypsyBrocante.etsy.com 's Black Friday post at her blog: http://www.gypsyfleamarket.blogspot.com/ -- for the newest basic black listing at bibbysrocket.etsy.com: Black 50s men's frames. and to http://www.everycloghasitsday.typepad.com/ for featuring those gorgeous Olaf Daughter clogs on her comfy Sensible Sunday shoes post a couple of weeks back.

Eyeglasses, Fashion Functional

Forget fashion forward, rearward, or other (less kindly) fashion denominations. Eyeglasses are the necessary 'cessory, so we might as well have fun with them. If you're a shy or retiring person who (gasp!)  nonetheless has specific tastes -- don't let opticians or glass boutique owners sway you from what it is you know you want-- you'll end up with unresolved glasses fantasies (which you will be utterly forced to resolve in your later years). Possibly worse -- you will be living someone else's vision of and on your own face. (No pun...)

There are sooo many great shapes, styles, colors, and materials out there, especially in vintage frames. Whet your appetite on some of these and you may find yourself 'neeeeeeeding' more than several pair! Luckily they are easy to care for, and while they may disappear from your own view, you won't disappear from others' with a striking decided upon pair of frames on your face.

Practical Shoes

Yes, as fall digs in and winter approaches, we turn our thoughts to sloshing in the snow and all things cold and mushy, and protecting our footies from such-like discomfort and nonsense. As difficult as it may be to stop ogling vintage pumps of every stripe, we believe it is more difficult to wear them in said circumstances. Leave a pair at the office, we say, but skid not into oblivion.

So, here is a little homage to practical shoes, those dignified, cozy, treaded things that we may take for granted now and again.

Plaid & Prep

I've been really into plaid, cowboy boots, the prep thing, classic white and ruffle front shirts, and cardigans. This is what I came up with yesterday. The dress is a huge school-girl tent dress that can be cinched at the waist (it has a pocket!!), and it was warm enough not to wear tights.

Shhhh Chanel

Everyone's asleep; I have a few minutes alone. And I'm thinking always of a white cardigan matchup with oversized ascot bow and trousers, and high shoes, that I saw in the NY Times (previous post), as a tribute to Coco Chanel. Truly, I've been wearing such a structured white cardigan, over a toga like dress and black loose fitting linen pants, for two days now, inspired by this look.

It's raining a lot, and like I said, there's so much comfort in a nice sweater, ex-specially a cardigan.

Coco Chanel: A Life

I can't wait to see this film and possibly read some bio, as time allows. This Times article was quite the teaser.

Haute Low, The Sweater, More Rightly: The Cardigan--A Versatile Classic

When prim is cozy, or just in need some security (even in 70-degree weather), I always grab my friend, the cardigan. It's warm, it's got buttons to fiddle with, sometimes it's even got pockets. It's cuddly, and it comes off in a dignified manner that doesn't mess with your hair. It complements every wardrobe; dresses up a t-shirt; dumbs down a too hot, possibly intimidating, ensemble, seemingly saying: look, I'm approachable. On a date. At work.
Oh, cardigan!

Vintage Autumn

We here in bibby's rocketship are thinking about autumn, or fall, and seasons, in general. We seem to have experienced a flattening of seasons, like they are all blurring into maybe, say, I don't know -- TWO? One being Winter (begins on November 26th, ends on March 31), and the second being a Spring-like Autumn (the rest of the time).

All this got us here at bibbysrocket remembering a book, incorrectly, at first as "What season are you?" and incorrectly as published in the late 70s. It was actually Carole Jackson's "Color Me Beautiful," first published in 1980, though we can't seem to locate a picture of that first edition. The great thing about this book is that the author has determined we all have a suitable wardrobe color palette, based on our hair and skin tone. There are four basic color palettes, one for each season, mine being: Fall.

Lauded by Vogue as "the single most important factor in selecting flattering makeup and clothes....gives extensive details of the palettes for each season," we have to admit it's a  neat trick for its simplicity and ur-like appeal.

What's Hot in Vintage!

I am excited that one of my items is featured on a blog post about What's Hot in Vintage -- Homecoming Fashion, at My Shopping Connection: http://www.myshoppingconnection.com/articles/whats-hot/vintage-homecoming.php

Evan Picone Snakeskin Stilleto Shoes from Bibby's Rocket - $36
There's nothing quite like a pair of black stilettos to make you feel sexy, and these vintage Evan Picone snakeskin shoes, circa the 1980s, are simply fantastic.
The black snakeskin is accented by a bird-winged swoosh on the stiletto heels (about 3"). These heels are marked a size 9 but might fit 1/2 size smaller.

Op Art Suitcase, WOW OUI

I have been getting really into the idea of what is considered op during different periods (see Seurat long sleeve shirt) and this ranks right up there with the whole idea of art meeting fashion and the everyday object.
